held at Douglas College was given
in the New Westminster YMCA? A
budget cut two months before the
official opening in September 1970
left officials scrambling to find class-
room space for the fledgling college.
A dozen residential child care stu-
dents, a few newspaper reporters,
then-principal George Wootton,
and co-ordinator Lyle Howarth
crammed into the Y. Said Howarth
during the address to that first class:
"We only have a few rules. You have
the right to learn and Ihave the right
to teach. You may smoke and drink
coffee in class, but anyone who
wants to eat garlic sausage has to get
permission in a vote from the class
body." #
