UBC’s ARTS MEDAL WINNER DROPPED OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL Another of UBC’s leading prize-winners this year is a student who failed to graduate from high school. Linda Clark, 27, of 2335 Col- lingwood is the first fine arts student at UBC to win the University Medal for Arts and Science for top marks in the arts faculty. Mrs. Clark, whose husband John is working on a PhD in philosophy at UBC, says she dropped out of her Grade 11 class in Hamilton, Ont., about 10 years ago because she was “bored and unhappy.” After a succession of jobs ranging from waitress work to “travelling around, painting from town to towm,” she en- tered Vancouver City College for the equivalent of a first university year, and then transferred to-UBC. This time, she‘plans to stay in school indefinitely — first as a student, and later as a teacher in fine arts. “I’m goimg into graduate studies now, and with any luck at all } hope to get my PhD." d She has won a $2,000 univer- sity fellowship for studies at UBC next fall. Although she’s been painting for more than 10 years — with encouragement from her father, a commer- cial artist in Hamilton — Mrs. Clark says she’s concentrating more on the academic side of ° fine arts. _ “But I hope that next year I can take the whole summer off to paint in Europe,” she adds. 13 AUDIO—VISUAI INV Tm A t MIUGLAS Cor! rar Gwe } NATIONAL FILM BOARD | “CHIVES CATALOGUES AND FOLDERS = Gene McIntyre has several copies of the most recent National Film Board catalogue as well as folders which advertise the latest films.
