In 1998, after seeing the anti-racist PBS documentary Not in Our Town, and reviewing Camosun College’s Not in Our College campaign, a group of Douglas College employees was similarly inspired to take a stand against hate and bigotry on campus. Asa result of their hard work, Diversity Week at Douglas College has become an annual event. “LT hope that people will take away a sense of common community from Diversity Week,” says Jerome. “While we may or may not appear to be different, diversity week brings us together to share our common human responsibility to each other and celebrate our differences and similarities.” A variety of events take place during Diversity Week, ranging from films and talks to storytelling and button-blanket creation. Fundraising efforts throughout the week will focus on various opportunities for supporting educational efforts and teachers in Afghanistan through Women for Women Afghanistan, Vancouver Chapter.
