Back in 1969, the first four positions were advertised at soon-to-open Douglas College. Dr. Don Porter was named Dean of Curriculum, Henry Naylor was Executive Assistant and David Williams became Chief Librarian. Appointed as Dean of Community Programs was some- body named Bill Day. Source: Yeah College! by Stewart Graham You don’t hear much dulcimer music these days, at least not in New Westminster, but Community Support Worker Instructor Rosemary Love brought hers to the Easter Hootenanny in the Child, Family and Community Studies fieldbase on April 15. Farewell to Barbara Offen Everyone is now aware that Barbara Offen has accepted a position as Staff representative at BCGEU headquarters. Barbara has been with the College since 1979, during which time she made many friends. She was involved with the Union in many ways, sitting on commit- tees, acting as shop steward, chairing the bargaining unit, and finally acting as Staff Repre- sentative during the last round of bargaining. We all wish Barbara well and congratulate her on her achievements for which she worked so hard. Her commitment to the membership has been unwavering. With this in mind, I feel it would be fitting to have an informal gathering for Barbara at the end of P.D. Day on May 27. (She will be on campus that day.) Contributions toward a gift and refreshments would be appreciated and can be given to any of the stewards. More information will follow closer to the day, and I ask that we endeavour to make this a happy and pleasant surprise for Barbara. Anne Fenton, Acting Chair, Bargaining Unit President Report highlights - April Mayor Lou Sekora, of Coquitlam Municipality, invited a Douglas College team to make a presentation to City Council on April 8, regarding the Coquitlam Campus. Members of the team were Gerry Della Mattia, Jim Doerr, Mark Crozet, and myself. Two days later, I made a presentation to the Coquitlam Rotary Club on the same topic with some different emphasis. On April 2, the College CEOs met with Shell Harvey and other senior government person- nel to discuss the structure, directions and implications of the current provincial budget. On April 14 and 15, meetings of the Advanced Education Council of B.C. occurred. Consid- erable attention was focused on student aid problems, labour relations and financing continued on page 6
