© Sports the other press Flash Gordon dcsportseditor@yahoo.ca November 5, 2003 Not So Crantastic Avalanche Women’s Volleyball Flash Gordon Sports Editor It was Volleyball Friday in the Lions Den of New Westminster; the Lions Den, being the Douglas gymnasium. The game was played in front of meagre numbers since the rest of the world was out trick or treating or looting the Lower Mainland. Sandra-Joy Unaegbu had the first kill of the night for the Royals. In the first game of the volleyball match, Douglas had some ups and downs. That’s the way it goes with a sport involv- ing so much jumping. The Royals remained in control in the first game and held off a minor comeback by the Avalanche. Game two went to the visitors who took the “happier” side of the gym as I like to call it. Douglas rebounded and won the next two games. I’m far from an authority on the sport but at one point in the fourth and final match, it appeared the referee decided to arrange the Douglas players on the floor as he saw fit. As ludi- crous as it may sound, I figured that must just be one of the millions of rules of volleyball that ’m unaware of. Douglas did score a victory in the end 3-1 but their forth game cut it a little close. The Royals made a few judgment errors allowing the Avalanche to stay close and make things inter- esting. It was a good victory after the women’s team took two losses on the road in the previous weekend. For scores from Saturday’s match, check the BCCAA website < www.bccaa.ca/>. Mount Brand Sends Avalanche Down on Douglas e Men’s Volleyball Flash Gordon Sports Editor Tl keep it short since the match only lasted three games. In their first weekend of play, Douglas split their away games 1-1, losing to always strong, Capilano Blechs and beating the nefarious Langara Falc-awhatsits. The College of the Rockies Avalanche brought a strong, experienced unit from their home in Cranbrook, BC. During warm-up, the differences in the teams weré evident. Not so much skill-wise. More so on the height differential. Douglas looked a ittle short on umm...players. After number crunch- 5 the, average height of both teams, the results ‘ages don’t work out right but when it came down to it, the Do itters had a hard time breaking rs. Jeff Payne came through with some spectacular hits and I wondered why he wasn’t used more but it’s not like basketball where you can constantly go to one player and expect to win. All three games were deci- sive wins for the Cranbrookians but Douglas put up a decent fight. Coach Sapic’s boys were disciplined in the face of a damn good opponent. Another curious fact was that the entire Royals’ roster played without wearing knee pads. Perhaps it’s some kind of team building exercise where they all plan to get knee sur- gery together. Douglas played OUC on Saturday.
