Employees who have unpaid leaves, pension refunds, or worked in auxiliary or contract positions without paying into the pension plan (non-contributory service) can purchase this service within the following time limits: For service before April 1, 2002, the deadline to purchase is March 31, 2007 (February 28, 2007 for College Plan). For service April 1, 2002 or after, the deadline to purchase is five years from the end of the event. College Pension Plan (Douglas College faculty and administrators) The College Pension Board has approved changes for pension contribution rates which go into effect on September 1, 2004. The rates will increase from 5.5 percent to 7.95 percent of salary under the year’s maximum pensionable earnings (YMPE) and from 7.0 percent to 8.7 percent of salary over the YMPE. The College Pension Plan indicated in a May bulletin sent to all contributors that the rate increase was necessary to maintain the financial soundness of the pension plan. Municipal Pension Plan (Staff) The Municipal Pension Plan will host its third annual general meeting on Saturday, October 2, 2004 in Vancouver at Simon Fraser University - Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings Street at 9:30am. Visit pensionsbe.ca for more information. Briefly Michael Wilson (Geology and Anthropology) was an invited participant in the conference, “Paths Across the Pacific,” in July in Sitka, Alaska. He presented atalk entitled, “Coasts, Caves, and Animals: The View from Vancouver Island,” summarizing recent findings concerning the Ice-Age mammals from the island. The conference involved researchers from Canada, the United States and Japan and investigated issues in the early peopling of the New World. Wilson was appointed to the four- person steering committee for next year’s “Paths Across the Pacific,” again to be held in Sitka. He also published a review of the book, Young and Innocent? The Cinema in Britain 1896-1930, in the Journal of Transatlantic Studies, vol. 2 (2004). The review drew upon his interest in the use of media for intercultural communication. * Susan McCaslin, English instructor, has a new volume of poetry coming out in November. A Plot of Light is published by Oolichin Press on Vancouver Island. Book launch and readings to be announced at a later date. r Alanna Thompson (née Bradley) of the Registrar's Office married Gord Thompson on August 7 at Jericho Beach in Vancouver. “Thank goodness the weather held out!” says the new bride. “It was pouring rain the night before during the rehearsal dinner, but cleared up with blue skies in time for the ceremony the next day. Our honeymoon was spent in Campbell River and mountain biking in Whistler.” ‘ Ross Nichol, Stagecraft, has taken a one-year leave and has been replaced by David Roberts. David is well known in the theatre and film community as a designer. He has received numerous Jesse Awards for his work. Most recently his efforts have been seen at this summer's Bard on the Beach. Welcome, David! * Congratulations to Laurie Thiessen (née Robinson) of the CMO, who married her long-time partner and friend Jason Thiessen on August 7 in Kamloops. Mr and Mrs Thiessen celebrated their day with friends and family before winging off for a week in Las Vegas, where they basked in the sun, tried many of the buffets and generally enjoyed themselves. Computer Information Systems instructor Barb Allen spent a weekend in August walking in the rain, all for a good cause. Barb walked in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer, August 21 and 22, personally raising over $3,600 for breast cancer research in British Columbia. “The complete weekend raised over $7 million. It was great — sore feet, but worth it,” says Barb. ‘ Scott MacDonald of the Stagecraft program and his partner Colleen Holub are very proud and happy to announce the birth of their first child, Madeleine Patricia Holub MacDonald, born August 5 at 11:27pm, 8lb loz at BC Women’s Hospital. “The Karen Shumka, piano 12:30pm, Performing Arts Theatre Support the Performing Arts The Society for the Preservation of Vaudeville (www.thevaudevillians.com) presents a concert on October 2 at the Surrey Arts Centre called “Back in Those Good Old Days.” All of the members are seniors who have come together with the aim of bringing joy and laughter to all. The proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Douglas College Foundation to start a new student aid endowment called The Vaudevillians Endowment Fund for the Performing Arts. The Foundation encourages Douglas College employees to attend this fun event and support performing arts. Ashifa Dhanani (née Manji) of the Registrar's Office married Aneez Dhanani August | at the Lonsdale Quay Hotel. Their four-day celebration was rich in South Asian tradition, and guests came from as far away as England and Africa to attend this special day. Susan McLean, departmental assistant in Developmental Education has left the College. After a visit to Vancouver Island, Susan decided she wanted to live there.
