New Operations Manager at The Training Group Wilma McCrossan looks forward to forging relationships and defining operating procedures as she takes on the newly created role of Operations Manager for The Training Group. “Part of the job is to help build relationships between The Training Group and other areas of the College and the faculties,” says McCrossan. “I believe the key to building relationships is talking to people, listening to find out what they need and want and then encouraging them to create the future.” The Training Group, formerly known as Community and Contract Services and also Centre 2000, administers a wide variety of career development programs including the Self Employment Program and the BC government- funded Training for Jobs program. Many of its courses are targeted to people on Employment Insurance or Income Assistance and focus on getting people back to work. McCrossan is already well-versed for her new job with extensive experience in the Office of the Vice President Academic during the dialogue about merging Continuing Education and Centre 2000 into the Instructional Division. She also served as the Chair of the McCrossan brings a wealth of Douglas College insider knowledge to the table, as well as a solid background working with outside stakeholders such as the Ministry of Children and Family Development. She has been with the Institutional Self-Study from 1996 to 1998. “Now, the College is at a point where it can draw on its internal strengths to develop new opportunities to connect with business and other organizations,” says McCrossan. Promise into Practice Over 700 people from 26 nations attended Promise into Practice, a conference for child and youth care workers held August 20 to 23 in Victoria. The Child and Youth Care Counsellor Program at Douglas College, as a member of the Briefly Congratulations to July's 50/50 Employee Lottery Winner, Academic Advisor Arlene Patko. Douglas College instructor Bruce Hardy leda workshop with former student Rob Bates, now a graduate student at the University of Victoria, on Jennifer Kirkey, Physics, was one of the presenters at Look Lake, a science camp for elementary school teachers organized by Science World. She did a two-hour workshop called Floating and Sinking which culminated in the teachers building a canoe (or kayak, or dory or...) out of cardboard. September 25 Noon at New West presents Robin Shier Jazz Quartet, 12:30pm, Performing Arts Theatre Mental health forum for teens Imagine being a teenager, a challenging time in the best of circumstances, and then imagine having to struggle daily with forces within yourself seemingly determined to make your life miserable. Studies show growing numbers of young people are having their lives disrupted by mental health issues. Another disturbing trend is the length of time between the onset of these problems and the appropriate treatment. A group of health care professionals hope to raise awareness on these issues with a mental health education forum for teens on October 9 at the Pinetree Community Centre and David Lam Campus in Coquitlam. The Douglas College Psychology Department and Health and Safety Committee, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and the Fraser Health Authority, Fraser North have teamed up to host this event during Mental Wakabayashi who is on leave from the Coordinator position until May. Speakers include: Victoria Maxwell, one of BC’s top educators on mental illness and recovery; Dr. Jane Garland, Mood and Anxieties Disorders Clinic, BC Children’s Hospital, on depression in youth; Dr. David Atwood, Clinical Director of Early Psychosis Intervention Program, Fraser North, on early psychosis intervention; and Dr. Sal Denny on substance use.
