President’s Report Highlights Lloyd Morin BC Open University A proposal involving a partnership _ between the Open Learning Agency and _ Langara, Capilano and Douglas colleges to create an enriched BC Open University has been turned down by the Ministry. The institutions involved may consider alternative means of effective collaboration. Athletic Awards Banquet Douglas College athletes and coaches were honored at this year’s banquet at the David Lam Campus. Lou Rene Legge and her team provided a first class evening, MC’d by rugby coach Michael Collins. “Coach of the Year” was Brian Newman, who led his volleyball teams to the Canadian College Championships. Of 13 colleges, Douglas College was the overall winner of the BCAA Aggregate Trophy. Open University Convocation On April 11, I represented the College in the Academic Procession at the Open University Convocation. Congratulations to Susan Laschuk and Heather Thompson of Douglas College, who were awarded , Bachelor of Health Science (Psychiatric Nursing) degrees. V3L S5B2 Budget Development Budget decisions continue to be made based on the following considerations: 1. Reductions will occur in all divisions, and will include reductions in both salaried and non-salaried expenses which have the least negative impacts on students. 2. Required staffing reductions will be kept to a minimum and: - will not result in reductions in student enrolments. - will not increase faculty workloads. - will not reduce the capacity to meet the required 6,046 FTE. 3. Collective agreements, negotiated settlements and contracts will be honored for all employees. 4. Funding will be provided for: - additional sections in areas of high student demand. initiatives and developments specifically targeted to Charting a New Course and to Douglas College strategic directions. 5. Positions will not be created or maintained when there is not a demonstrated student demand or need. 6. Changes will position Douglas College to move forward into the next decade. International Education Activities April 16 saw a display and report upon the successful completion of the Douglas College project in Nicaragua. In other news, a small delegation from Douglas College has been invited to visit Shanghai to investigate the possibility of delivering health care programs to Chinese students. §f David Lam honored at Coquitlam dinner The Douglas College Foundation’s Friends of David Lam Dinner attracted more than 200 guests on April 23 to honor the achievements and ongoing community works of British Columbia’s retired lieutenant-governor. The event, held at Coquitlam’s Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club, also enabled guests to learn more about Douglas College’s David Lam Campus and the new opportunities it provides to the Tri-Cities region. “Tt is my pleasure to commend Dr. Lam on his 30 years of outstanding service to the people of British Columbia — and convey a special thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of Douglas College,” noted a message from Premier Glen Clark. In addition, the evening featured the announcement of a $50,000 donation to Douglas College from the Hongkong Bank of Canada (HKBC). The major gift, presented by Senior Vice President of BC Dewar Harper, will be allocated following discussions between HKBC and College representatives.
