The Play is an adaptation of Edgar Lee Masters' novel of the same name. Characters in the play are former inhabitants of the town of Spoon River, who come back from the grave to expose previously hidden parts of their lives. Theatre Program convenor and Dir- ector of the play, Dorothy Jones, comments: "It makes a statement about small towns -- things are not what they seem:" The theatre students will portray the townspeople and their secrets © with the use of folk music and verse. The following two one-hour present- ations will be given: "It's All in The Family." Scenes from the Merchant of Venice, Angel Street, A Taste of Honey, Measure for Measure, The Rivals will investigate relationships between brother and sister, father and son, husband and wife, friend and friend, as drawn -by playwrights and seen by 20th Century playgoers., "Words Words Words" will concentrate on the power of poetry to move an audience. The actors will attempt to make the language of Shakespeare more clear and more understandable by using their craft and their emotions. Scenes and speeches will come from the Shakespeare plays of 1976 .and 1977.
