INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MAY 2, 1989 New Operating Grant of $21 Million Douglas College Continues to Grow in 1989/90 More students, more per- manent faculty positions, new equipment, and a possible tui- tion fee increase are among the changes expected at Douglas College over the next year, Peter Greenwood, College Bursar, said recently. Commenting on the 1989/90 operating grant of $21 million Greenwood said, “It’s an im- provement over previous years, but not as good as expected.” The funding will allow 250 more full-time students to attend the College. As well, in a recent memo, College Comptroller Karen Maynes said, ““We have received verbal assurance from the Ministry (of Advanced Education) that we will be receiving a further addition of 50 FTE (full-time equivalents) for the Health Information Sys- tem program to be transferred to us from BCIT.” The total amounts to a 7.8 per cent FTE increase. On the teaching side, Green- wood estimated that 18 to 24 faculty positions will be “regularized” over the next year and more instructors will be hired. For equipment needs, such as new microscopes and com- puters, the College has received over $1 million. This includes $150,000 for new programs, and almost $600,000 for equipment replacement. The balance of over $250,000 is an advance on the 1990/91 capital grant. As for the tuition fee increase, Greenwood said, “There will probably be an increase. How much, is dependent on many variables, that we will assess in May and June.” Provincial funding represents approximately 85 per cent of revenues needed to cover day-to- day operations at the college. Tuition fees provide about 12 per cent, and other sundry revenues such as facility rentals bring three per cent. Other changes expected at Douglas College over the next year include: ¢ *addition of 10 sections to this year’s summer school, bringing the total to 40 sec- tions offered. e “renovations to expand class- room facilities. « addition of a Post-basic Psychiatric Nursing Diploma. Greenwood said the current negotiations between Douglas College and the BCGEU staff union and between the college and the D.C. Faculty Associa- tion are also key factors in budgeting.
