INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / JANUARY 22, 1991 English and Communications Department Appoints Chairperson Lorna McCallum A. opportunity for fresh perspectives has come to Douglas College in the form of the newly hired chairperson of the English and Communications Department. Lorna McCallum expects her involvement will be in the budget and day-to-day operations of the department as well as with facility advocacy and sitting on commit- tees within the department and the institution as a whole. She plans on getting to know the college first, however. “I think it’s best to find out what’s in place before I make any plans. I want to first see how the college operates and familiarize myself with the usual policies and procedures of the Department. I’m sure I will enjoy the variety,” she says, not only of these duties but also in working with three fairly distinct disciplines, English Literature and Composition, Workplace Writing, and Creative Writing. McCallum says that her management style will be a very open one. “I take a very democratic approach, and I feel I am quite open to hearing sugges- tions from people,” she says. In addition to her skills as a creative writer, McCallum has achieved a PhD in English Litera- ture, focusing on the Victorian period, taught English and Com- position form some ten years, and been Director of Effective Writing Resources at the University of Al- berta for eight years. McCallum replaces Maurice Hodgson, who has successfully completed his three-year term as chairperson and will return to his faculty position. Unable to elect a succeeding chairperson internally, the English and Communications Department moved to an external competition which saw McCallum as the outstanding candidate. At the end of McCallum’s three-year appointment, the department will return to the electoral process. a 4 BritisH CoLumsiA AsiA PaciFic AWARDS Te Ministry of Advanced Education, Training, and Technology, through the British Columbia Centre for International Education, offers a variety of awards to public post- secondary students and scholars who wish to develop their understanding of the cul- tures, economics and languages of the Asia Pacific.
