The 57th Grammy Awards retrospective

» An evening of glitz and glamour with pop culture's finest

he Grammys: one of the

few nights of the year
where musicians and other
famous folk flock to one place
for mass mutual pats on the
back. There’s plenty to say
about February 8, the night
of this year’s celebration of
popular music (as is the case
with most of these events).
There were a few surprises,
most notably veteran alt-rocker
Beck winning album of the
year for his country-folk critical
darling Morning Phase. On
the other hand, some things
don’t change at all; LL Cool J
hosted for the fourth time in
a row, the celebrities and the

and Kanye West once again
found himself questioning the
integrity of the music industry
due to Beyoncé not dominating
every category.

The performances featured
artists that cover just about
every genre and era of music

: imaginable. Newer artists such
: as Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran,

: and Katy Perry shared the

: massive stage with music

: industry veterans like Beck,

: Electric Light Orchestra

: (ELO), Tony Bennett, and

: AC/DC. Ed Sheeran joined

: ELO member Jeff Lynne for a

: performance of the latter’s hit
: “Mr. Blue Sky” in a super duo

: performance reminiscent of

: last year’s Imagine Dragons/

: Kendrick Lamar one-off live

: collaboration. In tribute to

: female victims of domestic

: violence, Katy Perry took the

: stage to sing “By the Grace of

: God” following a pre-recorded:
: message from President Obama :
: concerning violence against

: women.
performances were extravagant, :

The party guests looked as

: sharp as you would generally
: expect them to in the public

: eye. Beyoncé showed up

: looking as fresh as she always

: real good, representing the

: men in the fashion category.

: Obviously, some icons were

: notable for all the wrong

: reasons: Madonna's outfit was
: just an absolute catastrophe,

: showing off much more of

would like to start this DIY

Beauty by stating that I was
inspired to find a way to make
mascara after hearing about
some beauty guru on YouTube
making their’s out of crushed-
up Oreos. For the record,
making mascara out of Oreos
is incredibly dangerous, and
should not be done—ever! Not
only are Oreos over-processed
and chemical-ridden, but they’re
also made in a factory and have

either during the production
process or during the packaging
process.

Now I know what youre
thinking: “If they’re okay to eat,
then they can’t be contaminated,
right?”—wrong!

Your digestive system has
built up immunities towards
certain bacteria and other
irritants/contagions that your
eyes have not. So though the
idea sounds cute, making
mascara out of Oreos risks a
major eye infection or other
problems. My recipe allows you
the fun of making your own
mascara, but all the products are

with this organic recip

Now that the PSA portion is

: done, on with the recipe!

Remove the inner cap from

: the mascara container. This

: opening that cleans the lumps
: off the brush. Set it aside for

: later.

In a double-boiler,

: combine the coconut oil, aloe
: vera gel, and grated beeswax.
: Stir continuously until all the
: contents are evenly melted— :
: there should be no weird lumps. :

: charcoal. Do not just dump the
: pills in; the outer casing will
the potential to be contaminated : not melt, because it’s meant to
: be digested and broken down

: uncomfortable using activated
: charcoal, which can cause

: irritation with sensitive eyes,

: oryou would prefer a brown

: mascara, replace this step with
: adding ¥ tsp. of cocoa powder.
: Stir contents until they are

: completely mixed in with the

: melted oil concoction. Remove
: from heat.

Before it cools, witha

: spatula (the smaller the better),
: scrape the mixture into a plastic
: sandwich bag. Push contents to
: one side before snipping a hole
: in the opposite corner. If you cut

Make your own mascara

» Make your eyes pop,

: safe to use around your eyes.

You will need:

2 tsp. coconut oil

4 tsp. aloe vera gel
i1tsp. grated beeswax

2, capsules of activated
charcoal (it’s a vitamin)

One clean mascara
container. You can buy one
from a makeup supply store,
or just use one of your old
empty ones. Clean it out
with hot water and vinegar
beforehand.

: mascaras, you should replace it
: after six months.

Awards had something for
: everyone. Though not all the

performances were great, those

: that were, were fabulous, and
: give me hope for the rest of the
: awards season.
