Pints for life “T feel very privileged to have received this award and appreciate the community recognition. Of course, I’m really fortunate to work in a collaborative setting that values and promotes accessibility for students with disabilities,” says Victor. The award is presented to individuals or organizations that provide community education that modifies or adapts the learning environment to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities. Twenty-five pints of blood may sound like a lot but for Meg Stainsby and Marie Gonzales it’s just a drop in the bucket. English Instructor Stainsby and Employee Relations Coordinator Gonzales are local champions for the Canadian Blood Services Partners for Life campaign. The program encourages institutions and organizations to promote blood donations among their employees and patrons. “Since January, Douglas College employees have donated 25 pints but we hope to reach the goal of 75 pints by the end of the year,” says Stainsby. Every second month, two shuttle buses pick up donors from the College's Agnes Street entrance for afternoon trips to the Mobile Clinic at the Glenbrook Park Amenities Centre in New Westminster. The next opportunity to roll up your sleeves and donate blood in New Westminster will be on Thursday, September 6. Contact Stainsby at stainsbym@douglas.bc.ca for more details or to reserve your seat. “Deb creates a seemingly effortless feedback loop between the students, instructors and CSD. She ensures that all the necessary supports, whether technical, pedagogical or personal, are in place for their success,” says Jillian Hull, Coordinator of the Student Success program. Douglas College's Opportunities Enabled program was also nominated for the Educational Access Award. The program trains people with a physical disability for computer-based careers.
