Douglas College's Tim Frick, head coach of the Canadian women's wheel- chair team, talks with Vancouver's Marni Abbott during the Paralym- pics champlonship game In Barcelona on Sept. 13. Canada won the game and the gold, defeating the U.S. 35-26. Winning Spanish gold Winning gold in women’s wheelchair bas- ketball at the Paralympics in Barcelona on Sept. 13 was, of course, a very big deal. But defeating the top-ranked American team 35-26 to do it was "unbelievable", ac- cording to Canadian coach and Douglas College P.E. instructor Tim Frick. "This is a dream come true after years of hard work, belief and training," said Frick. Frick laid the groundwork for the victory during tryout camps and scrimmages at Douglas College’s New Westminster campus during the past two years. The practices paid off in Spain. Canada defeated host Spain and Australia, before edging Germany 29-28 to enter the playoffs. Canada beat the Netherlands 46- 43 and entered the gold-medal game with the defending Paralympics and world champions from the U.S. The match would be decided before 10,000 fans on the same court where only weeks earlier the American ‘Dream Team’ captured its men’s basketball gold medal during the Olympic Games. "We had a wall full of faxes from sup- porters from all over Canada and many of the other teams were cheering for us," said Frick. "Entering the game I told the athletes ‘just play and enjoy yourself, and when you look at the scoreboard at the end of the game you will be happy.”" Winning gold continued on page 7 College views in the news CKNW radio talk show host Bill Good will broadcast his show live from Douglas Col- lege on October 14.
