Mad Hatter Page 6 Being an archeologist means never having +o say you're boring. Al McMillan, an anthropology instructor at Douglas College, should know: he is popping off +o Fort St. John this summer for another interesting project. Under the auspices of the Simon Fraser University archeology department, McMillan will be joining a team of | researchers in July to conduct a study on the earliest fur trade post in the province. Lucky to be Involved in this Research McMillan, who has done similar work with native Indian bands, and university and | college teams around the province, con- siders himself lucky to be involved in this type of research. The site he is heading towards is the original town of Fort. St. John, the first Northwest Company trade fur post on the mainland of British Columbia. Along with an historian, an ethno-historian, and a physicist,McMillan will help gather +he available information without digging up the site. "This is just a preliminary look at the site before the SFU team returns for more detailed work next year," McMillan says. "The interesting thing about this particular job is that the site was only in use from 1784 to 1805. "A+ that time the company packed up and moved the fort to where the city stands today." The project has received funding from the B.C. Heritage Trust for historic archeology, and it represents a shift in the sort of work this Douglas College instructor usually is involved with. "|l'yve always been interested in prehis-~ toric archeology, and have never taken the opportunity to look at something where we have written records of what happened," McMillan says. "It's really very exciting for an archeologist. - DOUGLAS COLLEGE NEWS SERVICES All Staff, Faculty & Administration Thank you for the overwhelming amount of contributions for Aline Abraham, the security guard who had a heart attack a few weeks ago.
