si nace september 18, 2002 Sports The Games Students Play Neill Jefferey OP Contributor Starting to feel a little stressed? Need to ease your aching mind and get physical? Ready to kick some- thitig easier than a habit? Maybe some recreational soccer would do you good, and help you sweat the small stuff—those weekly assignment deadlines. Why not get your kicks with the Douglas College Intramural Co-ed Soccer League? Who plays intramural sports? People like you and your classmates. You can share the camaraderie of victory, the triumph of manifesting goals out of finesse, speed, and chance, or even brute luck. Imagine the thrill of winning and losing as a team, the objective fun of simply competing. Heed the call and nourish your competitive nature, by participat- ing in Intramural sports. Get your share of the exhilaration, and suffer the pleasures of exercise in the process. There, you're starting to feel better already, just thinking about playing instead of study- ing. At noon on Thursday, September 26, in the New West Gym, Co-ed Indoor Soccer will commence. Each team of 10 or so players must include at least 2 females, but don’t you dare speculate that will make the competition any less intense. If you think the women around you at Douglas College are nec- essarily less aggressive in sports than guys are expect- ed to be, you weren't watching the Intramural Floor Hockey games last winter. Tie Domi would have taken notes. Donald Brashear would have looked over his shoulder. Some of our female hockey play- ers looked like they were going for gold against the Americans. Is that fun?!! More than one feisty female had to be cautioned not to be overly aggres- sive; some guys could get hurt, especially in their feelings. Even Intramural sports can bring out the beast in you as a competitor, but best of all, the pleasure of playing for fun is inevitable in recre- ational sports, signified in real smiles and uttered in good-natured jocularity. Put together a soccer team of your classmates and friends, or simply register as an individual at the Activities Office, Room 1317, in the Athletics the other press Department. Douglas College I.D. cards must be presented, and a registration fee of $15 per player will be collected prior to your team’s first game. Games will be played in the wide-open, full-size New West gym, between noon and 2p.m. on Thursdays. Each team will play one game a week, over a season of 10 games. A thorough workout can be anticipated. Conversely, if basketball is your game, 3 on 3 is already underway on Thursdays, from 2 to 4p.m., with the champion trio moving up to represent the college at the CIRA 3 on 3 Championships, right here at Douglas College, October 5. Other recreational activities offered at Douglas College include Latin dance, belly dancing, and drop-in table tennis, basketball (Th. 2-4p.m.), wheelchair basketball (Mon. 2-4p.m.), badminton and volleyball (Fri 2-4p.m.). For more information, contact Activities Coordinator Ed Lunn, in Room 1317.
