So close—again

Two weeks ago, the basketball
gods turned on the men’s
basketball team in the first
half. Last week they decided
to give the Royals hope, then
crush it out of them.

For the second week in
a row, the men’s team opened
their game with a strong man
to man defense and an
intense hustle, which led to
early turnovers and missed
shots by the Trinity Western
Spartans. DC was also operat-
ing on all guns offensively,
beating the TWU zone with
powerful inside work from
Aaron Frampton and a rain of
3 pointers from its guards.

Mid-way through the
first half, the padding under
one of the baskets dislodged
and had to be taped back into
place before play could

 

 

resume. The Royals took
advantage of this bonus
timeout to go on an 11-point
run and achieve a 43-41
halftime lead.

Scott Hill came out of
the locker room on fire,
hitting 2-2 behind the arc
and one 2 pointer from just
inside the three point line. In
an attempt to slow down the
high flying DC offense, the
Spartans threw on a 2-2-1
press, causing havoc in the
Douglas backcourt and
allowing TWU to crawl back in
the game.

Trinity Western was in
the bonus for much of the
second half, a testament to
the physical nature of this
game, which saw Royals
players diving all over the
court and crashing inside for
rebounds. The bonus didn’t

help TWU as much as it
should have, until DC lost its
shot with four minutes to go.
Leading 71-62, coaches
Alex Zabori and Dave Heel
called time out to gather
their troops and tell them
that a win was in reach.
Unfortunately, their strategy
didn’t work as the Spartans
slowly inched their way back
into the game, erasing the 9-
point lead the Royals had
carefully built. TWU called
time with the score knotted
at 74 and used its free throw
shooting to seal the victory
84-78. “It was a tough game,
the guys came with a lot of
heart,” said coach Zabori
after the game. “We just
couldn't execute our stuff
when they gave us a little
pressure in the backcourt.”
