Ne 70NF Fall, while signaling the end of summer, is also the time for a fresh start... a chance to turn over a new leaf, you might say (or many, if it’s your job to rake the lawn!) Unlike the Roman tradition, the Jewish calendar follows the lunar cycle; each new month begins with the new moon. Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, falls on September 13 this year. For the College, the fall marks the start of a new semester, the opening of a new campus, and the welcoming of a new interim president. No matter which calendar you follow, INside wishes you good luck for new beginnings. Shana Tova! Harvey’s Last Hurrah After eight years of braving the rain, Leslie Harvey of Financial Services is heading back to Calgary this month with partner Steve. Things she won’t miss: traffic jams and the cost of housing. Things she will miss: her friends and colleagues at Douglas College. All the best, Leslie. A Day on the Prairie Retired Douglas College President and whirlwind-at-large Bill Day is on the road again. First up is another motorcycle challenge, as he heads off with his trusty Honda Goldwing for the Three Flags Classic. This demanding rally will see him complete a trek from Mexico back to Canada in just three days. As soon as he returns from the Classic, Day will be packing his bags for a 6- month trip to Regina (sans motorcycle). He’s accepted a new challenge there to serve as the interim President for Wascana College at the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology. “Let’s just say they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” he laughs. On his return to BC, Day will continue his ongoing work with the UBC Faculty of Education and with various activities around Douglas College. But thanks to the wonder of e-mail, Day notes, “Everyone who wants to can still get in touch at any time.” For anyone who wants to personally wish him luck with his new position, his permanent e-mail address is wl_day @douglas.bc.ca. Bravos from the Board Two new Douglas College Board Members were elected by the students earlier this year. Chantelle Desharnais and Jaimie McEvoy will attend their first meeting September 19. Thanks to outgoing student representatives Lori Sheppard and Rick Perrault, who are stepping down after their one-year terms. Blue Highways and Beyond Librarian Penny Swanson had quite a trip on her summer vacation this year. Inspired by the character-rich bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, she and her family drove south to Savannah, Georgia. Of course, before that they visited Wisconsin, North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Carolina. Afterwards the group continued on to Florida, Texas and Arizona before their transmission finally blew in Palm Desert. All are now safely home. | “Which way to the hockey pool?” 9 rr oe Trent Ernst of the Other Press discusses the finer points of recreation with Richard Williams of Athletics and Intramurals at last month’s Student Orientation Fair. Orientation Coordinator Mary Whorley thanks all participants who helped to make the event and closing barbeque such a success.
