Coaching Clinic First at College Softball coaches from across British Columbia gathered at Douglas College recently to get some coaching themselves. Softball has become so popular in Canada that another level of coaching certification had to be developed by Softball Canada. The Level III clinics were presented in for | the first time in Canada at Douglas College. “There is a great demand for qualiaty coach- ing,” says Penny Gardner, program co-ordinator of Softball B.C. “These people take softball seriously, and they take their prepartion as coaches serious- lye Many of the participants use the clinics as the first step into careers as coaches. In fact, even without resorting to the press, the Royals still snagged the ball enough times to set a new school record by crushing the Capilano Blues 146-88 in BCAA play on Feb. 9. The record-breaker highlighted a successful weekend in which three Douglas teams continued their conference-leading pace. In other basketball ac- tion, Douglas defeated Trinity Western 87-73 while the women’s team beat Capilano College 85-74. In women’s volleyball, Douglas swept their three games at the BCIT tournament while the men posted a 2-1 mark playing in Prince George. In North Vancouver, Douglas faced a Capilano squad discouraged by news that they would not be hosting the upcoming nationals as scheduled, due to a suspension to coach Neil Chester. The Blues ran of- fensively but shied away from physical defence, al- lowing 10 Douglas players into double figures. Lak Johal and Dave Gill each scored 19 points to pace the Royals, who piled 77 points after building a 69-40 halftime lead. Douglas needed to work harder for its home- court victory the following night, building a 41-34 halftime lead over third-place Trinity Western. Former Royal Jason Wubbs scored 16 for TWU while Onkar Hayre paced Douglas with 22 points and Steve Patrick added 14. In women’s basketball, Douglas led Capilano by only 76-74 with three minutes remaining before final- ly stopping the Blues with a 9-0 run. “We didn’t do anything different, Capilano was doing all its shoot- ing from the perimeter and they just went cold,” said Royals coach Richard Norman, Royals’ Carrie Carlsen led all scorers with 33 points while teammate Lorraine Denis added 18. The women’s volleyball team improved its con- ference-leading pace to 14-1 after overcoming one of its major challenges this season. After sweeping host BCIT 3-0, hard-working CNC from Prince George posted a 2-0 lead before Douglas rallied to win 8-15, 15-17, 15-5, 15-6, and 15-13. Tanya Hall led the Royals with 18 kills while Sandra Boffo and Teresa Ascoli added 17 points each. Royals men moved their volleyball record to 10-4 in Prince George, defeating CNC 3-1 and sweeping Malaspina before losing 3-0 to second-place BCIT.
