RS reer = & sae meme ft sidering their current feud in the media) doesn't give him any lyrical mention. Although Hole is basically Courtney Love and her band, one member of Love's troupe is gain- ing more and more importance as Hole grows together. Bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, a Canadian no less, adds her axe to great, understated bass lines, and lends her beautiful, soft voice to the “oohhhs,” “aaaahhhhhs,” and other assorted backing vocals that crop up on every song. The album probably wouldn't sound the same—or as good—without Auf Der Mautr’s bass lines and voice. Pal ‘ os : Cedo Equinox JOCHEN BIERTUMPEL quinox’s new CD is very relaxing. It has some marvellous melodies that blend both new technology and traditional orchestry into a frappe of magical, melodic messages for your eardrums to enjoy. This CD filled with Italian and French songs is reminiscent of Latin Pieces. This group of musicians has awesome sound quality and inno- vative melodies. Their technical skill is perfect. No beats sound erratic or rushed, but multiple, instruments that must have been aided by synchronizers and other equipment, produce a sound so coordinated that it’s difficult to identify individual instruments. The singer is very talented as well. The ten songs all sound tantaliz- ingly delicious to the ears. This CD is one that could be bought either for relaxation or to be given as a present to an old friend. If you want to relax easily, try playing this CD. The Phoids JOCHEN BIERTUMPEL The Phoids is a band that plays some great music. The Phoids are: Jac Calabro, Matt Chiaravalle, Greg Bass, and Michael Chambers. If you like songs about love this CD is for you. On the other hand, if you don't, this CD probably won't be for you. This CD seems blisteringly bad during the first song, but the CD improves as you move through the tracks. The second track, called ‘The One Thing’ is way better than the first song. It doesn’t sound like drums being pounded into hell. Instead it actually sounds rather good. The other songs are even better. This band reminds me of an early version of Tom Petty, so I guess they copied him right down to the bone. This band put together a nice CD with melodies that sound great. If you're into the 1970s, you should check it out. Pigment Vehicle DEREK TURBERFIELD Are you looking for a CD that you can slow dance to? Or maybe one you can dance a jig to? Well this wouldn't be it. However, if you want some- thing fast-paced and perhaps a lit- tle Mosh Pit oriented, then by all means put on your crash helmet and listen to Pigment Vehicle’s CD, Murder’s Only Foreplay When You're Hot For Revenge (Sudden Death Records). This is the second release by the trio from Vancouver Island, and I've got to tell you, I was slightly impressed. These guys have put some good melodies together and that’s apparent from tracks like ‘Sleep, ‘I Compare You, and ‘Tt’s Impossible.’ Mind you, there are also a couple songs like ‘Fake’ and ‘Bubble Highness’ that are really Weekly wrestling nothing but recorded noise and beg the question, “Why are these songs here?” But don’t let that distract you, this CD is worth a listen. smokey Joe’s Cafe DEREK TURBERFIELD Seven-time Tony Award—nomin- ated and Grammy Award-winning musical, Smokey Joe’s Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller, is coming to the Ford Cenire for the Performing Arts Octuber 6 through 18, 1998. The fans sure loved it, but I wasn't impressed whatsoever. I respect Ric Flair more than anyone in wrestling history, but the man is over fifty years old. He's clearly past his prime and shouldn't step back into the ring. If he gets injtsred at his age, he might not be able t= walk again. . When Flair retives, J fon’t want my last memory to be of ium struggling to walk around the ring with a cane. The Four Ho-sei ien are probably the greatest factor: in wrestling histo- ry, but they camt keey: re-creating this group. Ever si: ce the inclusion of Steve McMichse! an ex-football play- er who doesn’t know a wrist lock from a wrist watch, I've lost my interest in this group—whi-h used to be known as the elite in wrestling. Names like Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Lex Luger, Barry Windham, Sid Vicious, Brian Pillman, Curt Hennig and Jeff Jarrett have car- ried the banner of the Four Horsemen. All of these men have one thing in common, they are all legends in the industry of protessional wrestling and futi-re {all of Famers These are the Horsemen however, see it in Chr Benoit and Dean Malenko. These tw: men are great wrestlers, but if they remain in WCW, they won't get pas mid-card status. It’s been said many times, but in WCW, your in-ring ability does not matter. Both Benoit and Malenko need to defect, to the WWE, not only to fill serious holes in the roster, but also to save their own careers. I can picture either Benoit or Malenko as the WWE World Champion in a few years. Until then, the Intercontinental and European Titles are nothing to be ashamed of. Not only do I frown on the fact that Flair returned to WC but I question his wisdom in signing Ever since he left, WCW’s promoter, Eric Bischoff, has publicly berated Flair in on-line chats all over the Internet. By the way, these insults we: real. If Flair gets back in the ring, I see him as job bait for Bill Goldberg and Hollywood Hogan. If he signed with the WWF, he certainly wouldn’ be wrestling, but he would’ve had a solid manager's job with a real Horsemen faction comprised of Shawn Michaels, Bart Gunn, Brian Christopher and Scott Taylor. I see feud with DeGeneration-X written over this. Page 8 September 231998 The Other Press
