Twenty-two students from la Belle Province are here at Douglas taking part in the Languages at Work Program. They immerse themselves in the English language and culture while working in British Columbia. Employers who have hired students through the program in the past say having a French-speaking employee improves customer service, particularly for businesses attracting tourists in the busy summer season. “One employer who has taken part in the program said it was great having someone with new, fresh ideas on staff. He said his business has grown because of that,” says Languages at Work Project Officer Alexis Carr. This year’s students have varied backgrounds, ranging from the leisure and tourism a sO a En garde! Quebec exchange students are prepared to duel for work this summer. Cheung takes over for Jamie Oei, who, after winning the CCAA National Championship, has moved on to the University of Idaho mens basketball program, where he will be graduate assistant coach for the 2008-09 season. Cheung comes to Douglas College with an impressive playing and coaching resume. He won a BC High School Championship with Bill Disbrow and the Richmond Colts in 1998, before moving on to Langara College and helping lead them to the 1999 CCAA National Title. Selected Team Captain at Brandon University, he helped the Bobcats to four Conference Championships and two silver medals at the CIS National Championships from 2000-2004. He comes to Douglas College after being the assistant coach at Simon Fraser University the past two seasons. Cheung is also the Head Coach Jordan. industry to medical school. Students taking part in the program say their major motivation is building their English skills, while living on their own in a completely different culture. “Students have told me you can find work in Quebec just speaking French, but opportunities open enormously if you do speak English,” says Carr. of the Basketball BC Under 15 Team, after being the Head Coach of the BC Under 16 team last season. “Gil Cheung is one of the top up-and-coming coaches in British Columbia” said David Munro, Sports Institute. “He has a great deal of respect across the province and is known for this hard work and dedication. A The Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts congratulates Music Instructor and Choir Director Eric Hannan. As artistic director of the Vancouver Cantata Singers, Hannan wielded his baton as the choir won top honours in Choral 2008, the CBC National Radio-Canada biennial competition for amateur choirs. The choir placed first in the national competition just days after its 50 Anniversary Gala. th A Event, the Douglas College Review, is delighted to announce that “Pashtu, for Bird and Other Words that Hurt” by Kanina Dawson has been short-listed for a National Magazine Award in Personal Journalism. The piece was a winner of Event’s Creative Non-Fiction Contest #20 in 2007. Dawson's story is vying for the top prize with stories from Chatelaine, The Walrus and Toronto Life. Event is also pleased to announce that the short story “Whale Stories” by Vancouver writer Theodora Armstrong has been short- listed for the Journey Prize and will be published in 7he Journey Prize Anthology #20. A Criminology Instructor Colin Campbell travelled eastward recently to present his paper Amending and Privatizing the Gambling Sections of the Canadian Criminal Code at the annual Canadian Gaming Summit held in Montreal on May 1. Campbell also served as the External Examiner of a PhD defense in Sociology on May 9 at Dalhousie University in Halifax. A Creative Writing Instructor Andrea MacPherson’s second poetry collection, Away (Signature Editions), was published this spring. A book tour to Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal followed, where she was a presenter and panelist at the Blue Metropolis Literary Festival. ix David Lam Campus Academic Advisor Anne Dijk attended the British Columbia Academic Advising Association annual conference in Prince George. The Honorable Shirley Bond, Minister of Education and MLA for Prince George- Mount Robson was the keynote speaker. Her keynote address opened a dialogue between BC academic advisors and the Ministry of Education. Dijk was president of the association for the past two years and will continue as past president. A Kathie Lindstrom and Patricia O’Hagen from the Health Sciences Continuing Education Department are delighted to announce the addition of Lezelle Mignot to their team.
