oo < Jews who do it all. A secret Jewish cabal holds the puppet strings over all the world’s governments, especially the US, which is really just a proxy of Israel. All wars are fought on Israel’s behalf, the Jews control the media to stifle criticism of their policies, and alleged incidents of anti-Semitic discrimination and prejudice are either greatly exaggerated, or outright fabricated, in order to create public sym- pathy. I’m not oblivious to the fact that such While once logic and solid evidence were necessary elements in forming a political world-view, increasingly, such rational thinking is being eclipsed by the easy answers and circular reason- ing of conspiracy theories. ” fringe beliefs have found their way into some sectors of the political right as well. There are militia groups who remain deeply paranoid about the creeping effects of a sinister “New World Order” being planned by the illuminati behind the scenes. Every single politician is a social- ist, communist, or worse, and the world as we know it will probably collapse into a totalitarian global-dictatorship within the next few decades. Other conspiracies are more main- stream. In Canada, for example, our soci- ety and political culture encourage us to believe the “Americans” are engaged in some elaborate conspiracy to take all of our resources. The politicians love to drag this one out when their numbers are low, and accuse their opponents of being complicit in the conspiracy to win votes. Then of course there is also the secret “Gay Agenda,” the military-industrial complex, the all-powerful Vatican. The list goes on and on. It is not hard to understand the appeal of conspiracy theories such as these. To believe in one is to believe you hold a monopoly on the truth, and are thus part of a brilliant few who hold advanced knowledge and insight that the rest of ignorant society is oblivious to. To put things in even simpler terms, conspiracies are popular because they’re simple. They bring certainty to those who would other- find the world frustratingly complicated and inconclusive. Was the Iraq war launched due to a combination wise of President Bush’s political naiveté, faulty CIA intelligence, emotional public demand, and aggressive ideological advi- sors? Or was it launched because “the corporations” wanted oil? Or because “the Jews” told Bush to? Which explana- tion sounds coolest? Perhaps the rising popularity of con- spiratorial politics is simply yet another sign of a society that is denigrating into a culture of instant gratification and easy answers. In the old days, if something sounded too easy, it was deemed probably not true. Sadly, the opposite now seems to be the case, with complex explanations being dismissed as the “propaganda” of the elites, while the most simplistic con- spiracy theories are praised for being “unconventional” and “thought-provok- ing.” Ah well. If anyone needs me, I’ll be at the Neocon Zionist meeting. The elders are going to tell me what to write about next week. Oops, did I say that out loud?
