new music continued he has programmed into a drum computer. Combined with those sounds are others sampled froma busy urban street. The result is an exciting interaction of the primi- tive and the modern. Another piece, entitled "East West", begins with sampled East Indian sounds and shifts into contemporary Western sounds. Caldwell explains, "We use a lot of sampled sounds. If I were to play it acoustically, 1 would have truckloads of instruments. But using technology, I can combine hundreds of exotic sounds in the memory of my computer, and ac- cess them through my drum pad." Both members of the duo have studied gamelon music. Dolinski teaches synthesizer in Vancouver, and Caldwell is a percussion teacher at Douglas College. Putting their teaching skills to wider use, Current Figures has done over 300 school and com- munity concerts in the last three years, travelling throughout B.C. and the Yukon. When they play in schools they demonstrate their equipment for the students by playing their original music, and involve the audience by sampling their voices and incorporating them in an instant playback.
