INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MAY 16, 1989 Visit to Japan, April 1 - 13 (As presented to New Westminster City Council by Mel Hughes) Douglas College, through its Centre for International Education, was invited to send its President, Mr. William Day, and Chairman of the Board, Dr. Pauline Hughes, to Entrance Ceremonies of three education facilities in Japan. They were accompanied by Dr. Hughes’ husband, Alderman Mel Hughes. The first official visit was to our Sister City, the City of Moriguchi, where Alderman Hughes extended Mayor Betty Toporoski’s greetings to Mayor Hiromi Kita. Several Japanese educational in- stitutions were visited with whom Douglas College has academic linkage. Dr. Hughes and Mr. Day gave addresses at three entrance ceremonies. Of special note was the warm wlecome extended by Douglas College’s sister institute, Momoyama Gakuin University in Sakai City near Osaka. Students from this institution and several others have attended Douglas Col- lege in the past few years and more are expected to come this summer. This program is held in high regard in Japan and is most successful be- cause of the continuing interest of host families in New Westminster.
