Woo: We're going to make it. Any time now the cold, driving rains will stop altogether and the warm, driving rains will begin; a sure sign that we’re heading into spring and, blissfully, summer. While it’s still a little too soon to let down your guard and start showing up to work in sandals and shorts, the clearing skies and growing daylight hours say that warmer days are arriving soon. Thanks to everyone around the College who responded to the INside Readership Survey last month; they’re still trickling in. Overall, you think we’ re doing okay, but you’d like to see less of some things and more of others. We’ ll give you details next month after we take a look at the final numbers. The English Department’s Karen Cowan and her significant other, Colin Malcolm, became parents February 10 when their as-of-presstime-unnamed daughter entered the world. She weighed in at a healthy 8 lb. 1 oz. Rachel Nicole Schnitzer snuck in under the INside deadline when she was born to Eleanor Schnitzer of the Registrar’s Office and husband Ralph on February 20. Rachelle paused to tip the scales at 7 Ib. 7 oz. before demanding food and a bassinet. Grappling with success... Four Douglas College alumni are grappling and grunting their way to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Greco-Roman wrestler Yogi Johl earned a spot on.the Canadian team in the 130 kg class while Rob Wellwood, Selwyn Tam, and Cory Kwak have each been named Olympic alternates. D.C. grad tops out... Charlyn L. Konefal, a graduate of the Douglas College Health Information Services Program, has been awarded the Canadian Health Record Association’ s 1995 Associate Level Award for Academic Achievement. Charlyn triumphed by topping 180 other students on the Canadian College of Health Record Administrators’ Associate-level examination. Academic money... The Canadian Bureau for International Education has money for people interested in increasing their knowledge of international development. The CIDA Awards for Canadians are intended to supply up to $15,000 to either the fieldwork portion of a master’s degree or a work/research project of a mid-career professional. In the past five years a population the size of Regina - 170,000 people - has moved to within a 60-minute drive of Douglas College’s New Westminster campus. Return to the Wetlands... General Nursing Instructor Marilyn Rainbow dodged some of February’s rain, cold, and general ugliness by heading off to Maui and Wakiki for ten days. She reports that there really is a big, yellow ball of fire hidden above the clouds and that the people of the islands call it the “sun.” Vince splits... Building Service Worker Vince Fenton celebrated his 65th birthday in late February with colleagues from around the College at a local watering hole. They celebrated so long and hard that he had to retire a week later. Congratulations and best wishes, Vince! Goodbye until April!
