SPORTS Royals to Host Tournament Brian McLennon, Sports Editor For the first time in many years, Douglas College will host a men’s basketball tournament in New Westminster. The tournament begins Friday, October 14, at 6:00pm and runs until Sunday, October 16. The round-robin format tournament will consist of BCCAA conference rivals, Langara College Falcons from Vancouver, Capilano College Blues from North Vancouver, and ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) powerhouse, Mount Royal Cougars. After scrimmages against the University of British Columbia and Trinity Western University, as well as a game against the Royals’ Alumni, the men’s basketball team will spend the next week preparing for their first tournament of the year where they will see their first CCAA-caliber opponents. “We believe we have put together a strong tourna- ment and we look forward to seeing how our team stacks up against some of the best teams in the coun- try,’ says Royals bench boss Jamie Oei. The tournament opens on Friday, October 14, at 6:00pm with Langara facing Mount Royal, followed by the Royals with their season home opener against mclennonb@douglas.bc.ca Capilano at 8:00pm. All games are located in the gym- nasium of the New West Campus. Douglas College stu- dents and children under 12 can attend for free, adult admission is $3. In other basketball news... The 2005-06 Royals’ roster will feature their third International student-athlete in two years when American, Nicholas Holman, suits up for the Royals this weekend. Holman follows Australian import Hugh Foster and Swedish import Mats Ericsson, who were both part of the 2004-05 Royals team. The Royals have added a pair of games against NCAA Division II University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The Royals will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska to play in the Nanooks home opener on November 6 and 7 at the Patty Center. The Royals are pleased to announce that former high school all-star Clayton Heuring will join the Royals second semester. Heuring played high school basketball at Maple Ridge before playing last year at UCFV. Woman's Basketball Royals’ capture Capilano tournament Source : www.douglas.bc.ca/athletics On Sunday, October 9, the Douglas College Women’s basketball team won the Capilano College kick-off tournament, defeating the Malaspina Mariners 64-56 in the final. The tournament started with a 82-27 victory over the Camosun Chargers on Friday, October 7, followed by a 67—56 semi-final win over the host Capilano Blues on Saturday, October 8. This year’s team features an experienced group of returning players, along with a deep bench. In total, there are 14 players on the roster. In any given game, any of these 14 players could be called upon to play key minutes. This proved to be the dif- ference in defeating both the Blues and Mariners on the weekend. In both games, the Royals team fell behind early and played catch-up ball. The Royals took the lead and secured the victo- ries in the final five minutes, with the depth and experience coming through with clutch defensive stops and key shooting, Overall, the weekend provided all players with valu- able playing experience, which in this early part of the preseason will help solidify the Royals’ quest to win a CCAA National Championship. The Royals travel to Calgary this week to play in the Mount Royal Cougars tourna- ment. This tournament features the previ- ous three CCAA National Champions, which should provide for some exciting basketball. Men's Soccer Matt Telford named BCCAA Athlete of Week Source: www.bccaa.ca Matt Telford is in his 2nd year at Douglas College. This 5'11" Maple Ridge native has been an inspirational player in the middle of the park and was an integral piece in last year’s provincial championship win. This past weekend was important in helping Douglas move closer to securing a playoff spot. In Saturday’s game against Kwantlen, the Royals went down 2-0 but clawed their way back to a 3—2 win. Matt started the comeback with a late goal in the winning goal. On Sunday vs. UCFV, in a hard fought and emotional game, Douglas once again found themselves down 1-0 early in the game. Matt brought his A game, playing a full 90 minutes, scored the equalizer, and eventually set up the play that led 3-1. first half.
