The student, who cannot be named due to doctor- tient confidentiality, was pulled from classes at the ancouver school this month with symptoms of the iisease. TB is an infection in the lungs and is spread when bmeone coughs or sneezes. People nearby may breathe h the bacterium that is spread into the air, according to memo from Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Symptoms include weight loss, chest pains, short- ess of breath and a chronic cough that may contain ood. Reka Gustafson, medical health officer for lancouver Coastal Health, said a positive test for TB fection does not necessarily mean sickness will occur. “TB infection is very different from TB disease,” ustafson said. “Only 10 per cent of people infected ill go on and get sick.” The test will determine if an individual was exposed >) TB at some point in their life. Antibiotics are pre- tibed to prevent an infection from developing into he disease. An infected individual is not contagious, ustafson said — only people with active TB are con- gious. Skin testing will take place on Oct. 16 and 17 for yone who attended classes with the individual.
