’ Democratic Front. PHILIPPINES: NO CHOICE BUT CHANGE Violence and uncertainty have become commonplace in the Philip- pines. The tyranny of the Marcos dictatorship has ended, but riots, kil- ling and unrest mark the days of the new Aquino government. The March 19th Humanities Institute presentation at Douglas College will take a look at the problems facing Cory Aquino and her country in the film, Philippines: No Choice but Change. With a behind-the-scenes look at the country, the documentary shows how millions of Filipinos were caught up in the fight for freedom. Highlights of this hour-long film include dramatic foot- age of armed police attacking demon- strators, sugar workers under the blistering sun of Negros Island and urban slum dwellers scavenging in Manila. Also featured are various interviews with several political prisoners, and an exclusive talk with a leader of the revolutionary movement, the National In addition the Filipino view of the United States in- volvement in their country and the economic and military stakes that America has in the Philippines will be examined. The film starts at 1215 hours in room 2203. Admission is free and open to the public. MEMO TO ALL COLLEGE PERSONNEL We have been advised by Mr. W.R. (Bill) Emerton that due to a transfer to the east, it becomes necessary for him to resign as a member of the Douglas College Board and as Chairman of the Douglas College Foundation. Mr. Em- erton joined the College Board in 1977 as a Government Appointee, and served as Board Chairman in 1982 and 1983. Mr. Emerton has always been interes- ted in encouraging a strong commu- nity relationship and was instrumental in the creation of the Community Relations Development Committee, of which he has been Chairman for the past two years. Mr. Emerton has also had a strong in- terest in student aid and cultural development in the College and has served as Chairman of the Douglas College Foundation.
