MAD HATTER 8 Saves Lives The Health Education Centre at Douglas College is continuing its commitment to better community health care by offering a full range of First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) programs during the month of May.. Starting Saturday, May 3, the Centre will present the valuable First Aid - Basic 1 "The Adult" program, introducing participants to knowledge and skills in coping with life threatening situations. The program teaches accident prevention, one and two person CPR techniques and management of obstructed airways. First Aid - Basic I "The Adult" is a three week program including 24 hours of instruction, and the course fee is $60. Successful completion gives students their Red Cross and Heart Foundation certificates for one year. Classes are held at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College. People with previous CPR training are eligible for the CPR Basic I program offered at the Sherbrooke Centre of the Royal Columbian Hospital the evenings of May 6 and 7. CPR Basic | includes training in one and two person Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation for conscious and unconscious patients, treatment of children and a written exam. This course is six hours inlengthand costs $25. People living near Port Moody will have a special section of the Heart Saver program brought to their community on Wednesday, May 7. This course is four hours long, costs $18 and is the pre-requisite to all other CPR programs available through the Health Education Centre. Offered in conjunction with Port Moody Parks and Recreation, the course is held at the Kyle Street Recreation Centre beginning at 6: 00 P.M. Registration can be made by calling 937-5541. Heart Saver will be offered again on Saturday, May 10, at the Sherbrooke Centre of the Royal Columbian Hospital beginning at 9:00 A.M. The course fee is again $18. Also on May 10 are two special programs for the care of young people, CPR Heart Saver Baby and First Aid - Treating Your Child. Both courses are held at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College. Heart Saver Baby is designed for baby-sitters, daycare workers and other health professionals and the fee of $15 includes techniques, discussion and literature. This is a potentially lifesaving investment for families to give their regular baby sitter. Treating Your Child is a comprehensive " program, introducing participants to treatment of bleeding, obstructed airways, fractures, head injuries, burns, poisoning and fever. Other courses in first aid and CPR are available throughout the year at Douglas College, and information on these can be obtained by calling the Community Programs and Services division at 520-5473.
