» MAD HATTER SPORTS Rugby team splashes to victory The Douglas College rugby team opened its Spring schedule with an easy 28-0 victory over Trinity Western College at Hume Park on Friday afternoon. This is the first semester that a rugby | program has been attempted at Trinity. This was painfully obvious on Friday as the Trinity squad was no match for the experienced Douglas players. Being early in the season and seeing it was Trinity's first full scale rugby match, the game was shortened from the usual 80 min. to 50 min. At half time the score was 20-0 in favour of Douglas on the touchdown by Jagger (2), Andrews, Steve McDonald and Edworthy. Mercifull for Trinity the heavens opened up and it poured with rain in the second half, making playing | conditions extremely difficult, and keeping the score down. Jim Martin and Burt Kirby did score for Douglas however, to round the score out to 28-0. The Sunday game against Richmond was cancel fed because of the poor weather conditions. This weekend the team travels to Victoria for its annual tussles with Royal Roads Military College and the University of Victoria. Douglas hasn't ever lost a game to Royal Roads in the five years these teams have met, and Douglas hasn't lost to the University of Victoria in two years. They are hoping to keep their record intact, but the competition in these matches is always something to behold. The rugby team is still frantically raising funds for its trip to the Santa Barbara International tournament April 12 & 13th. Word is now out that there will be at least six overseas teams from Australia, New Zealand and Britain competing, with the remaining teams coming from Canada and the United States. So Douglas are going to have their hands full, to say the least. In their other matches Douglas easily defeated BCIT,Malaspina, Capilano and Cariboo. A serious blow to Douglas’ chance of re- taining the championship title this year was struck when their outstanding spiker and team captain, Karen Morely, broke her arm in a trampoline accident three weeks ago. Howéver, coach Harish Dalpatram is proud of the team's efforts and performance. throughout the season, and he is to be congratulated on a job well done.
