INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MARCH 13, 1990 HRD continued from page 5 energy to a College Professional Development Program. The range in time commitment is from a high of 2 days to 4 hours per semester. Fully 35% of faculty indicated that time available was not the major issue in participating but rather, relevance of topic to interest and need. In terms of preferred topics, the survey results reflect accurately where the College is in terms of age and experience of faculty members and in relation to recent major initia- tives in the field of education. Asa group of people, Douglas faculty have been teaching for a consider- able period of time. As such, faculty seem to be looking for what’s new and innovative in teaching (Innova- tive Approaches to Instructions - 87%) as well as what is considered to be Effective Instruction - 70%. We also appear to be considering Critical Thinking Skills (68%) as criti- cal in our development. We seem to be regaining our senses of humor - 68% of respondents want to know how to Use Humor as a Learning Tool. A second and major theme indi- cated by responses in the category of types of interest focuses on the effect of the continuing presence of com- puter technology. Many faculty (70%) want input into how to "use" computers in the learning process. While 68% want to gain proficiency or increase their skill level in using a computer (PC), 58% want to know more about academic computing or how to use computers to support their work in the classroom.
