Audio-Visual Tool Tips - Chalk dust and VCRs don’t mix! There have been increasing complaints to Learning Resources about the classroom VCRs not doing their jobs. The main complaint is, “I’m getting sound but just a fuzzy screen for a picture.” It seems that chalk dust is drifting through the cooling vents of the VCRs and falling in on the circuit board, causing the problem. The dust seems to be affecting the circuit that controls automatic tracking. A light rap with your hand on top of the VCR at the back will usually disturb the settled chalk dust and clear the circuit. If you enter a classroom that has an installed VCR, check to see if someone is storing a box of chalk on the shelf that contains the VCR. If you find chalk on the VCR deck, please remove it and put it on the floor away from the video deck. The longevity of these VCRs is being compromised by their exposure to chalk dust. Please do your part to keep a dust-free environment around the VCRs in the classrooms. Thanks for Briefs ze Lecture series funding available The Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation invites applications for funding for development of lecture series of general interest in an academic environment. Funding in the amount of $2,500 per series is available. Applications must be received by March 15, 1995. Lecture series receiving funding last year were a geography series, science seminars, and public issues in community and development. Topics should be of general interest and appeal to a wide audience. For more information, contact Mark Crozet at local 5359. za Telephone tips Having trouble with voice mail? The trees will be planted in a neighbourhood in New Westminster, so they will benefit the entire community. Species and plantings will be carefully chosen to ensure that the tree will live for many decades and remain as a lasting reminder of the people who have worked to make the College a centre of life-long learning. Eventually, the trees will form a grove and a small haven for urban wildlife. For more information, call Val Schaffer, local 5224.
