INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / SEPTEMBER 18, 1990 Good planning beats some of the registration blues hat do 6,326 students have in common? They’ve all registered for fall classes at Douglas College. Unfor- tunately, 497 students were turned away, unable to get any classes. Trish Angus, Douglas College Registrar says the registration process ran fairly smoothly con- ficer Bill Bell says the staff dealt with about 1,000 enquiries. "The information table was an excellent idea," says Angus. "The response was very positive." Although the registration process went smoothly, Angus and staff in the Registrar’s Office are looking forward to future changes to the stu- dent records system and possibly the entire process of registration. "I think our approximation of numbers worked out well,” she says, "It’s difficult to accurately anticipate how many students will come back each semester." For new students, a day-long Orientation program was offered a week before registration which Angus says helped to reduce con- fusion about the process. "Orienta- tion helps to ease students into the system," she says. "We try to be upfront and advise them that they might not get their courses." For the first time ever, an infor- mation table was set up and various staff from the Public Infor- mation Office were on hand to answer questions and make stu- dents more comfortable during registration. As excit- ing as the changes sound, Angus is cautious about providing more details until cost implica- tions have been worked out. a nis pA Several booths in the concourse gave students information about college programs and services. "We will be proposing some- thing to senior management in November,” she says, "but it will cost a lot of dollars. As much as I can see the benefits of a new sys- tem, we have to balance these benefits with the ability to pay for them. At this College, it seems time for us to move on," Angus says. "I'd like it to be sooner than later." Hi
