MAD HATTER 2 HYNNINEN WINS E.C.E. AWARD Every once in a while a student comes along who is very special to clas- smates and instructors alike. That's the way Carol Ebner, Co-ordinator of the Early Childhood [Education Program at Douglas College felt about Christine Young, a student in the E.C.E. program. Christine was an enthusiastic student who was dedicated to child care, but she had a particular problem that often made it hard for her to stay in the program. She had a congenital heart disease. “She loved children and she wanted to open her own centre, but it was a struggle for her just going to school,” says Jean Hammer, a Douglas College staff member and Christine’s mother, who helped to set-up the bursary in her daughter's name. The Christine Young Award is an en- dowment fund that was started just after Christine died in 1984 and is now administered by the Douglas College Foundation. Each year an award is presented to an E.C.E. student who shows a high academic standard, a commitment to child care and is in financial need. This years recipient, Charlotta Hynninen of Coquitlam, has the same dedication that made Christine Young memorable. Charlotta finishes the basic training in the E.C.E. program in June and has tentative plans to work at a child care centre for the summer. “Charlotta is a mature, full-time student who has a small child to care for. Her decision to return to school was a difficult one to make. With this money the struggle will be eased,” says Ebner. “There were tears in all our eyes when she received the award. Her two prac- ticum teachers came all the way from their busy jobs at Burquitlam Childcare Centre to give Charlotta a gift. That shows you how well she is thought of.” Charlotta Hynninen (centre) of Coquitlam, a Douglas College Early Childhood Education student and the most recent recipient of the Christine Young Award, is flanked on the left by Carol Ebner, coordinator of ECE and Jean Hammer (right), Douglas College staff member and mother of the late Christine Young. —_-= | SERRE 7 eteererres PERS 3 aE
