Photo by Chick Rice to appear at free WomenSpeak series A local female writer who bases major works directly on her life experiences will appear at Douglas College in February as part of the free WomenSpeak series. Evelyn Lau is author of the award-winning book Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid, as well as several collections of poetry and short stories. “The idea of WomenSpeak is to balance formal education with non-formal education by exploring what different women have to say. The basis is to encourage many different women’s voices, and to be inclusive,” says organizer Gillies Malnarich. Lau’s appearance takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 7 to 9pm. The event will be held in the Boardroom at Douglas College. Admission is free, but space is limited; you can reserve a seat by calling 527-5440. The first WomenSpeak event took place February 2 with author Rosalind MacPhee, a poet, paramedic, outdoorswoman and breast cancer activist who described her experience of breast cancer in the widely-acclaimed book Picasso’s Woman. The WomenSpeak series runs until June. All women and men are invited to attend.Watch INside for upcoming events.
