INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / OCTOBER 16, 1990 Volunteers Needed: Hospice St. James Social Service Society will be opening the May Gut- teridge Community Home on Oc- tober 29. This six bed facility is located in Vancouver’s downtown eastside and will be providing hospice care for the terminally ill. This is the first free-standing hospice unit in B.C. and only the fourth in Canada. The Community Home will be staffed by a Nurse/ Coordinator and Care Aides but will also re- quire volunteers. The program is seeking volunteers who are will- ing to commit three hours per week for a minimum of four months. Individuals should have an interest in providing com- panionship for, and support to, in- dividuals who are experiencing the process of dying. Training will be provided through the Van- couver Hospice Program.
