Look for it in every issue of Inside Douglas College. Did You Know... e e e e That Douglas College is named after Sir James Douglas, who was the first Governor of British Columbia? He was born in the West Indies and raised in Scotland. He rose through the ranks of the North West Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company until he was in charge of Fort Victoria; he was appointed Governor of Vancouver Island in 1852, and Governor of Mainland British Columbia in 1858. His years as Governor were marked by the turmoil of the Gold Rush in British Columbia. Douglas retired in 1864, and was knighted soon afterward. He died in 1877.
