MEMORANDUM November 9, 1987. TO: All College Personne] /Students FROM: Bill Day RE: 20th Year Celebration: 1989 - 1990 It's true - Douglas College is approaching its 20th Year. On November 19, 1970, our official opening ceremony occurred at the Vincent Massey Auditorium in the New Westminster Senior Secondary School, with The Right Honourable W.A.C. Bennett in the Chair, and protestors catcalling fran the balcony! Stirring days. At a recent meeting of the College Management Committee, Gordon Gilgan was named the senior administrator responsible for the planning of our 20th Year Celebrations, and the attached planning schedule was reviewed and approved. In order to get things moving, Gordon is holding a "brainstorming" session on: Thursday, November 19, 1987 (Douglas Day) 12:00 — 2:00 P.M. Royal Avenue Site Boardroom. Please came, with your ideas and your lunch, and help us begin planning for this milestone in our history. Do you remember 1970? What were you doing then? What was happening around us in November of that year? A quick search revealed the following, which I include as samples: The World For the first time in history, the United Nations General Assembly voted 51% to 49% to seat the People's Republic of China, Canada voting in favour. However, a two-thirds majority was required as a result of a previous vote. The United States was still bombing Viet Nam, and the Viet Cong were boycotting the Peace Talks. General Charles de Gaulle died. [9
