Scholarly research projects selected Douglas College's commitment to scholarly research resulted in the selection of 14 faculty members who will receive support for their Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research projects. Under the request for proposal guidelines for the Anecdote to Evidence and SoTL Research Cohort Projects, faculty members will conduct research projects linked to their teaching responsibilities. The following instructors have been selected: Laura Farres, Sport Science Allison Gill, Sport Science Anna Helewka, Psychiatric Nursing Paul Kennedy, Sport Science Jennifer Kirkey, Physics Lin Langley, Communications Lorna McCallum, English Don McPhee, Geography Kathy Runnalls, Geography Karen Sirna, Sport Science Susan Smythe, Geography Sara Stephens, Commerce and Business Alison Thomas, Sociology Miriam Tynski, Nursing Visiting Scholar, Dr. Richard Gale, will consult on the development and implementation of each project. Over 300 guests, including local business professionals, members of the media and politicians, applauded the 23 nominated entrepreneurs as they celebrated business successes and accomplishments. (Home-Based Business) New funds for Aboriginal training The Department of Child and Youth Care Counsellor (CYC) and the Vancouver Native Health Society (VNHS) have joined forces to help develop new educational paths for Aboriginal child and youth care practitioners. The partnership, which recently received funding from the Ministry of Advanced Education Special Aboriginal Projects, resulted in a 12-month project (September 2007 — August 2008) to carve out options that respect and reflect the evolving needs of Aboriginal communities and the child, youth and family service agencies that serve them. The team is working with representatives of the and Fraser regions to develop an Aboriginal Child and Youth Care stream in the CYCC program. Further, the team will address barriers to Aboriginal students while increasing the capacity of Douglas College staff, faculty and administrators to provide a welcome, relevant and supportive learning environment. Vv Geology instructor Michael Wilson is co-author with Randall Schalk and Stephen Kenady of two papers accepted by the journal Current Research in the Pleistocene (vol. 24, 2007). The first is Indications of butchering on a Late-Pleistocene Bison antiquus from the maritime Pacific Northwest. It concerns fossil bison discoveries, 11,000 to 12,000 years old, on Orcas Island, Puget Sound, and evidence of butchering by early hunters. The second is Early post-glacial ungulates on the Northwest Coast: implications for hunter-gatherer ecological niches, discussing a new view of the ecological background to early human colonization of the New World via the coastal route. Wilson's participation in this research program is supported in part by the Douglas College Scholarly Activities Fund.
