IN Douglas College New logo approved, on display through mid-July fter completion of a Visual Identity = Review Process that began in January, 1995, a new Douglas College logo was approved at the June 20 Board meeting. Since March, 1996 the College has been working intensively with Praxis Design to develop a final design that ts at once bold and recognizable yet versatile and timeless. Marketing Instructor Gail Tibbo supervised the testing of the final design with a variety of groups, which included high school and College students, prospective students and potential employers. “Reaction to the proposed logo was very favorable,” says Visual Identity Review Committee member Brad Barber. “No one symbol can sum up everything Douglas College means to employees, students and the community, but this was seen as a design that we can take into the next century with confidence.” Barber adds that signs at the David Lam Campus will use the new logo, but other uses will be phased in over time as part of the regular maintenance cycle. Stationery stocks and current printed materials will be used up before new materials are ordered, so extra supplies should be returned to the Printshop for College-wide distribution. Anyone planning new or specific uses for the logo should call Graphic Designers Alan Loo at local 5323 or Jamie Gunn at local 5254 as soon as possible. For those of you who have not yet seen the design, or wish to see how it might look on t-shirts, publications, business cards or letterhead, a display has been prepared in the Communications & Marketing Office, Room 4700. Everyone is invited to drop by, have a look and leave comments—your opinions are important as planning for specific applications gets underway. For more information about the new logo, please contact Brad Barber at local 5327. | What doesn’t Dave do? Maybe his silver-screen role will inspire him to take on more real- life referee duties. Watch out, Athletics! Samsung summer for ESL Contract Immersion Thirty Samsung designers will arrive from Korea July 29 for a five-week ESL course offered through Douglas College’s Contract Immersion services. “This project is an exciting ‘first’ for us,” says organizer Judy Parkin. ‘“We’re working collaboratively with Samsung now to determine their specific needs and our curriculum.” The company designers, who work in divisions ranging from programming and multi-media to transportation, will require specialized language training that focuses on professional and high-tech terminology. “We will also include some work that deals with Canadian design,” adds Parkin. “And everything will be incorporated into the academic, socio- cultural and homestay components of our immersion program.” The Douglas College training component is part of a long-range Samsung initiative to provide in-house training in English for its designers. As more companies and organizations move in this direction, especially around the Pacific Rim, specialized ESL programs such as the one planned for the College will become more common. In the meantime, those on the campus in August should give a wave of welcome to these Korean visitors. For more information, contact Judy Parkin at local 5410. |
