INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MARCH 19, 19917 Should the Vancouver Aquarium capture another killer whale to replace the recently deceased Hyak? Sue Anderson, Site Services No. I don’t believe in keeping animals captive, especially since whales are an endangered species. They should be left where they are so they can repopulate. Linda Ironside, ESL Instructor It’s a very complex issue and I’m still working on it. Right now, I'm not yet convinced that a zoo environment can be a healthy one for whales. Rhonda Emmerich, Public Infor- mation Office No. I believe the whales should be left in their natural habitat. If you’re going to study whales you can do it as well or bet- ter in their natural environment. Wendy Davies, Personnel Assistant Yes. The Aquarium provides a very good educational process. The animals are extremely well cared for. As a member of the aquarium over the years I support the research they do. They give ex- cellent behind the scenes tours and they have a wonderful sleep with the whales program that is very educational for young people. Philip Coloma, Systems and Computing Yes. The Aquarium is the only way to protect some endangered species. I think the Aquarium does its best to provide a natural habitat for the animals. Sandy McDonald, Security/First Aid I’m not sure, it’s a difficult question to answer. I say yes for educational purposes. Not everyone has the opportunity_to see a killer whale, but I don’t think that the Aquarium has adequate facilities to keep an animal like a whale.
