Bookstore Shipper/Receiver Dean Jansen INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / February 4, 1992 New Staff Profile: Dean Jansen Wie Shipper/Receiver Dean Jan- sen isn’t handling books in the Bookstore, he’s hitting the books at night as a Douglas College business student. And when he’s not dealing with books at all, Jansen finds Zen-like con- tentment as a right winger in an adult hockey league. "To me hockey is exciting, fast and aggressive. But | seem at peace when | play," says Jansen, 19. "There is nothing else on my mind when I’m on the ice. | just work hard and have fun." Jansen grew up playing minor hockey in East Vancouver. While sometimes envious of buddies in the system still vying to play professional- ly, he acknowledges his long-term prospects are better in the business league. "| haven’t exactly put my finger on what | want to do yet, but | plan to complete my CA." Away from the rink, Jansen enjoys skiing and softball. On campus, he finds his job a perfect fit with his studies. "| like the Bookstore. It’s handy for my classes and the people | work with are great." & New library network connects Douglas College @vith other colleges, universities he new Electronic Library Net- Vigea (ELN) puts the Douglas College library on the forefront of information transfer and access in North America. The cost of books has outpaced inflation, and the ELN allows libraries throughout B.C. to share resources, says Librarian Jean Cockburn. "What's especially good about the ELN is the dial-up access to the UBC and SFU libraries," she says. "It allows people to easily find out what other libraries have. Instead of all libraries buying a book, it can be shared, which helps to justify the cost." The network saves time and money in many ways, but Cockburn says one of the best applications for Douglas College is access to psychological abstracts, because there are many so- cial service-oriented courses and programs here. Most post-secondary libraries d many public libraries are in the network, which was developed with funding from the Ministry of Ad- vanced Education, Trainingand Tech- nology. Other current ELN projects include a Union Serials Database, a Media Database, a Union Catalogue on CD- ROM and a pilot for journal contents and document delivery. For more information on how you can use the Electronic Library Net- work, call Jean Cockburn at 5184. & The Music of Romance St Valentine's Day is approaching, and now is time to brush up on the music of romance at this Douglas College workshop.
