The Douglas College Music Department Scholarship Concert, on Friday, April 11, at 8:00 p.m., will include performances by the Douglas College Choir, Concert Band and the Stage Bands. This concert is an annual event, staged to raise money for music scholarships. Scholarships have, in the past, only been awarded to enrolled students, however, this year a new catagory has been established. The music department will now be awarding scholarships to first time students at the College. Recipients will be chosen during the departmen- tal auditions being held May 1 - 10. Feast For All Lovers of Music The concert promises to be a feast for all lovers of music. The Concert Band, under the direction of Blair Fisher, will perform "Mutanza" by Curnow and "Lincolnshire Posey" by Grainger. Tatsuo Hoshina will direct the twenty-seven voice Douglas College Choir through a selection of pieces ranging from jazz to "Ave Maria" by Bruckner to the Michael White spiritual "Goin' Home on a Cloud". Douglas College's award winning Stage Band, also under the direction of Blair Fisher, will complete this night of excellence with tunes spanning Duke Ellington to Chick Corea. For tickets and more information please call the Douglas College Box Office at 520-5488. - DOUGLAS COLLEGE NEWS SERVICES Summary of Research The following summary of research into school effectiveness was prepared for people in the pub- lic school system. Itseems worth sharing at the college level for two reasons: - much of whet current research has to say about effective teaching/learning has long been accepted as common sense by adult educators. - the more we examine the factors involved with effective teaching/learning, the less we see a need to develop separate pedagogies for adults and children. Much of the research information is based on the examination of schools in terms of student achievement, behaviour, attendance and delinquency/vandaligm. Larry Davies
