President’s Report Tripartite Committee—Roslyn Dixon (DCFA); Paul Taylor, Wendy Liew and Triena Marples (BCGEU); Deans Ted James and Bev Miller; Peter Sanderson (Administration); and Dan McDonald—for the effective work they have done in designing a template for reporting relationships within units of College administration, especially in instructional areas. They have demonstrated the viability of this collaborative approach to problem- solving, which all of us would like to see become typical at Douglas College. l wish to publicly commend the School District Liaison I had a get-acquainted lunch with Tom Harris, Superintendent of Schools, Coquitlam, and have arranged a follow- up meeting with him and his staff and some of our senior administrators. The purpose is to explore opportunities for greater cooperation and coordination of services. I have also met with Albert Pasquallato, Assistant Superintendent, in Maple Ridge with similar objectives in mind. V3L 5B2 Royal Roads/Ministry On Friday, November 15, I attended the installation of Dr. Gerry Kelly as President of Royal Roads University. While in Victoria I also visited with Ministry officials to discuss provincial trends, and possible implications for Douglas College. At this point there is very little information forthcoming regarding anticipated funding levels. Intra-College Communications I have been continuing my meetings in various parts of the College. Sometimes I sit in on regularly scheduled meetings of faculties or departments, and sometimes we’ ve had more informal opportunities for discussion of College concerns or broader educational directions and issues. I have also continued one-to-one meetings with Roberta Bend, Education Council, and Roslyn Dixon, DCFA, as well as the regularly scheduled meetings of constituency group leaders with the senior management group. If this appears worthy of consideration we shall follow up with development of some proposals. Decentralization/Devolution One of the principles being addressed in the ongoing re-organization of College administration has been that of decentralization or devolution of responsibility, authority and accountability. Recently, a College Management Forum (comprising the Vice-Presidents and mid-managers reporting to Vice-Presidents) discussed the operational implications of these concepts. Both specific examples of procedures and more general principles were discussed. Participants are following up with some specific suggestions that relate to their positions and areas of responsibility. College Management Forum The next College Management Forum is scheduled for December 11. This will be an informal sharing of information available at that time regarding budget procedures for 1997-98, and the sharing of assumptions and possible implications. Constituency group leaders have been invited to participate in that session as well. Lloyd Morin work globally; they kept in touch with Knowles while she was gone by phone, fax and e-mail.
