Douglas College Message from Lloyd Morin 2 AES: Study locally, think globally 3 Wild goose chase for Mary Burns 4 NurseLRC: Online and ontop 7 SIDE EASL helps Samsung leap into 21st century You may not have noticed them as they passed in the hall, but this summer Douglas College hosted some of the key minds behind how we will work, play, learn and communicate in the next century. Over the summer, the College provided English as a Second Language (EASL) immersion for a select team of young designers from the Innovative Design Lab of Samsung (IDS). This new division of Korea’s giant conglomerate has gathered top talent from fields as diverse as electronics, heavy industry, marketing, chemical engineering and finance. “Samsung believes the 21st century will be the age of design,” says documentary producer and new IDS employee Daniel Cho. “We want to be ready for it.” To get ready, the IDS designers will spend the next year training—in English—to keep Samsung on the cutting edge of product design, multimedia development and transportation methods. To help the group get started, Samsung was looking for instructional expertise in EASL as well as program flexibility. At Douglas College, the company found both. “Hosting a high-profile group like this was a first for us, but it turned out to be a real joy. These are well-traveled, continued on page 2 Korean designers gather around EASL Instructor Janice Penner during recent immersion classes developed for Samsung.
