Douglas Development is on the move. After 10 years in the College Development division, a reorganization has moved the team to Educational Services with Vice-President Al Atkinson. The team membership is also slightly different this semester, with Child and Youth Care Counselling instructor Rita Chudnovsky joining Physics instructor Jennifer Kirkey, Geography instructor Susan Smythe and Employee Development Assistant Wendy Waidson. Each team member takes the lead in a specific area. Briefly Learn to leave a legacy The Douglas College Foundation is part of a group offering Leaving a Legacy, a free estate planning seminar, Wednesday October 23, 1:30-3:30pm. Guest speaker Margaret Mason, LLB of Bull Housser and Tupper, considered by many as Vancouver's foremost Wills and Estate lawyer, will answer questions related to wills and trusts. She will talk about taxation and probate fees, and ways to reduce them. She has experience in wills where challenges are made, and has made a specialty of providing legal counsel to families and organizations where charitable donations are important. Chudnovsky will focus on College-wide strategic directions and on ways to streamline processes and make better use of time and energy. Kirkey will continue the new-faculty orientation and the instructional skills workshops, and will begin developing a Mentoring Program for new faculty. Smythe will support faculty development, assessment of student learning initiatives and will help coordinate the educational technology offerings. Waidson will carry on her work with the Green Team, Simplicity Circles and staff development projects. The seminar is held at the Royal Bank, 626 6 St. New Westminster, (2nd floor) with special guest speaker Bill Hughes, former host of CKNW’s The Roving Mike show. Deanna Waldron takes on the role of Collections Control Assistant in the evenings at the New Westminster Campus and Marlene Dilley is the new evening Collections Control Assistant at the David Lam Campus Library. “We want to make Douglas Development offerings more accessible to everyone. We'd like people to let us know if they want us to offer something for their department or faculty group,” says Chudnovsky. “People can look for the Developmental Conversations heading in the schedule to see when well be in the offices at New Westminster and David Lam Campuses, and then drop by and share their ideas.” The three faculty coordinators are also available for individual consultations with faculty members and groups. Douglas Development Wheelchair basketball three-peat Coach Tim Frick took Team Canada women’s wheelchair basketball team to their third consecutive Gold Cup world championship August 31 in Kitakyushu, Japan with a decisive 49-38 victory over the USA. The victory was also the sixth in a series of world titles that includes Paralympic victories in 1992, 1996 and 2000. Candle donations needed Family and friends of the missing and murdered Lower Mainland women have been holding an on- well, there are specially designed initiatives and events that support teaching and learning within the College community. The Fall 2002 going candlelight vigil in Port Coquitlam. The cost of candles is proving to be a financial hardship for them. To assist them, the Women’s Centre is collecting candles that will then be given to the Native Liaison Society (324 Main St.) for use at the Port Coquitlam memorial site. Candles can be dropped off at the David Lam Campus, Counselling and Career Services, room A1310 or New Westminster Campus Women’s Centre, room 4810. Loretta's a winner! Congratulations to Loretta Milne from Financial Aid, winner of the August 60/ 40. Loretta takes home $774 and student aid increases by $516. Douglas Development schedule is now available. Winston Chudy education fund The Foundation would like everyone to know that they will continue to forward donations to Winston Chudy’s education fund. Over $600 has been donated towards this fund. Winston Chudy is the son of Jackie Chudy, Purchasing Clerk at the College, who was killed August 28 ina car accident. Cheques can be made out to the Winston Chudy Education Fund c/o Bank of Nova Scotia and sent to the Douglas College Foundation.
