IFC ana STYIC New Years nonsense: Jagged jewels and stylish scales Pack all whimsical ruffles and romantic lace into storage to start off 2011 By Stephanie Trembath, Life and Style Editor ust when you think you have J= everything and are tired of watching a re-run of vintage trends on the runway (think harem pants and bomber jackets circa 1980) a designer will come up with something rare and trendy to sweep across the fashion scene and inspire a whole new look. While classic pearls and pastel colors will never grow old, women celebrated this holiday season in an assortment of dazzling jewels that serve as multifunctional weapons as well as eye-catching accessories. Club Monaco’s inspirational designer Meredith Kahn developed her own edgy line of jewellery called Made Her Think. Her accessories combine spikes with rhinestones, chunky pendants with chains, and rings that come with heavy fringes around square shaped stones or look like long talons. On the plus side, if you find yourself being followed home one night all that it would take is for you to flash your talon ring and perhaps your stalker will back off, although you also run the risk of impaling your date at the end of the night. Along with the eagle talon rings, Club Monaco displayed a wide array of metallic and gold varnish cuffs this holiday season decked out in tiny fish scales, which leads me to believe that a fish theme in the fashion industry is about the be big as New York designer Lauren Wolf showed off her latest diamond studded fish bone bracelet. Another funky trendsetter this season featured Jennifer Behr, whose headbands stood out with large spikes or silver studs on thick black bands. If you ever want to spend a night warding off all men, rather than dancing at Vancouver’s newest gay club 560, simply purchase a head-wrap decked out with one inch spikes from ear to ear. I promise, no men will hit on you with a metallic weapon wrapped around your pretty little head. As I enjoy finding new obscure things to wear, and secretly adore the idea of wearing jewels that look like something out of Startrek, I loved this idea of blending weaponry with fashion wear. Christmas morning I happily opened a jewellery box I got from my boyfriend and to my entire family’s dismay, I pulled out a long necklace made entirely out of razor- blades instead of the traditional blue box from Tiffany’s. Personally, I would much rather ring in the new year wearing jagged jewels and scales than something everyone else is wearing, but that’s just me.
