Giving the ultimate gift

hen Sheridan Ladbrook-Gibbons

first heard the beeper while teach-
ing at Douglas College last March, she
could not believe it. The special beeper
was telling her that a life-giving heart
had been found for her husband
Michael. For almost a year the couple
and their four children had endured an-
guish and false alarms, and Sheridan
feared getting her hopes crushed again.

But within 24 hours Michael Gib-
bons did receive a new, healthy heart;
within three weeks he was visiting his
wife’s reading and study skills class-
room to tell amazed students of his
struggle to live.

Ladbrook-Gibbons now wants to edu-
cate others about how donating an organ
can help other families. She will help run
an information booth during Douglas
