an 20, 1986 Replacements Review It’s a shame that | walked into the Commodore in December only _half- way through the U-men because | would have rather missed them al- together. They were a very unskilled garage band doing their damndest_to try to be wierd. Thankfully, the droning music and vocal pollution finished after 3 songs so we could hear the music coming over the P.A. system. Go four 3 were up next, and this local band livened up the club quite a bit. But then so would have Engelbert after the amazing U-men. The band was fast and displayed some good musicianship. | think that the band would have been a lot more effective if they had a male singer for the girl did not complement these musicians at all. On next was the headlining band, named the Replacements and, person- ally, | wish they would have been replaced, for they were horrible. They epitomized the problem with North American music today, where all the bands want to slide into that mainstream form, play to mindless crowds, and not have to worry about learning any new chords or being at all improvisational. After 3 songs of screaming guitars and sub-motorhead lyrics, | thought it about time to leave before | turned into a tattoo with long hair. L ’ neath and the men always on top. As “indeed it is blasphemous. The clever Catching Up With Depeche Mode This compilation album. is..a..great piece of work. Depeche Mode have sure changed their style since they started in 1981. You can hear the change all throughout this album. The first side is mostly their old stuff from their previous albums. These songs are full of hypnotic dance rhythms which keep you in a dancing mood. The second track on this side New Life, sends you into a dance frenzy which you cannot control, your legs. start moving unexpectedly when the fast rhythm starts. The next track § Just Can’t Get Enough is full of different rythms which will keep you in a dancing of side 1 you start feeling the change in the music, the songs go from single beat rhythms to multi-beat rhythms. The last track on this side is the beginning of their new style. The lyrical content of Master and Servant is a message that life is always like sex, where women are always under- the lyrics say, ‘‘Domination’s the game’’. On...the.. start..of..the..second side Blasphemous Rumours plays on and and emotional lyrics in this song puts you in a sad mood. This song really: comes out and questions god’s exist- ence, and also states why, if there’s a god, is there so much pain in the world. The track Somebody is a slow love song where the singer wants to control the woman in his life. The reason why this band is so good is because they are original. They write good music as well as very good lyrics. The fifth track, It’s called a heart, is similar in style to Master & Servant. All in all, this album is a must for fans and critics. by Phinder Dulai The Other Press cceenneereeeeeee seletecetecsteseretatatatatetatetatetstatetetetetetetstenstatntetetstatetetetetatetetetetetstatetatetstenetatetstenstetetetenstensatetetete’ 0.0.0 0.0.0 6.0.0 6 0 0 0.0 6 0 0 0 060 00000060600 6 06000 e866 602s 2606 eo 5: follow your heart In the last three years the two Jazz bands of Douglas College have made a yearly record. Two of these have already ‘‘gone to press’’, and a third Modaji is in the process and will be available in March. This year’s record is still in the initial stages of record- ing. It doesn’t have a definite title, but will most likely be called Follow Your Heart, after the piece by the same name that is being prepared specifically for the album. The recording for these albums was done at the college and at Ocean Sound, a local 24 track studio, with the school ICA doing the technical work. This year the bands are going to use a live digital recording system that will take less time and allow for the record to be available sooner. Funding for these recording sess- ions was raised by the bands when they played dances or sold records, and by the support of the Student Society (that was greatly appreciated). For anyone who enjoys the big band sound, it is highly recommended that they catch the band’s next appear- ances at the Hot Jazz Club, Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8.
