Green Team Kudos The Facilities Department is working to wipe out toilet paper waste. Joining the Douglas College Green Team in campaigning to reduce paper waste, Facilities is installing a new system that is expected to produce substantial savings in tissue. The major step is removing single-roll dispensers (whose rolls must be replaced before they are empty) with dual- roll dispensers that allow all paper to be used. Two years ago the College used approximately 545 cases (8.7 million feet) of toilet paper; the new system is expected to result in savings ranging from 15-25 percent. College expansion work halted The College received notification from the Ministry of Advanced Education on August 31 that the current project to add fifth and sixth floors to the north side of the New Westminster Campus has been frozen. The College was told that all work is to cease immediately and no additional costs are to be incurred. Based on the information received, it is understood that the project could be delayed 12 to 18 months. The need for additional computing and classroom space at the New Westminster Campus continues. As well, demand for more funding to provide additional classes at the David Lam Campus continues to grow. Applications for admission to College credit programs are up seven percent this year. With these pressures in mind, President Susan Witter will continue to work with the Ministry to ensure they appreciate the need for more programs and facilities to properly serve the growing communities in our region. College-wide updates will be provided as new information is received. Any questions or comments may be directed to Susan Witter at 604-527-5381 or Terry Leonard, Director of Facilities at 604-527-5365. Stephen Lewis coming to Douglas College Mark your calendars: Stephen Lewis, recently appointed UN AIDS envoy to Africa, former Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations and former Leader of the Ontario NDP will speak at the first-ever College-wide Professional Development Day. Set for Wednesday February 13, 2002, classes will be cancelled for the day and the College will work to keep staffing to a minimum, allowing most people to attend. In addition to Lewis, the planning committee has also arranged for Carol Matthews, writer and poet, to speak. Matthews, a 30-year Malaspina University College student, faculty member and Dean, will talk about the history, role and importance of the community college in BC. Lunch (included with registration) will be followed by a selection of participatory sessions. The day will close with a reception in the Amelia Douglas Gallery featuring an exhibit of works by Douglas College employees and their families. More information will be coming soon to your mailboxes. Wine and dine to raise money for students Treat yourself to a night out with A Class Act, the Douglas College Foundation’s fourth annual wine-fest. “It’s a good way for the College community to meet their colleagues in a wonderful, elegant social setting,” says Myrna Popove, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Also, all proceeds from the event go into bursaries supporting Athletics and Hotel and Restaurant Management students at the College, as well as the CKNW Orphans’ Fund.” Held in Coquitlam at the Executive Plaza Hotel, A Class Act offers guests a chance to sample wine and appetizers, participate in silent and live auctions and enjoy live music performed by College musicians. “There'll be an international selection of wine for people to sample,” says Popove. “We expect to have 14 or 15 wineries represented, and each one typically serves four to six different types of wine. There'll also be non-alcoholic punches for those who prefer not to drink alcohol.” Auction items include a two-night stay at the Tinhorn Creek Winery guest house for four; two nights in a two- bedroom condo in Beachwalker Villas in Semiamhoo in Washington State; a one-night stay for two including breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver, and hot and cold appetizers for 20 people served in your home in the Lower Mainland. A Class Act is held Thursday November 15, 7-9:30pm. Each year isa sell-out event, with last year’s evening seeing 325 guests attend.
